“A Mãe eo Mar” takes the story of the “fisheries” to the Fortress of Sagres

Gonçalo Tocha's film will be screened as part of the exhibition “Um Mar de Filmes!”

The film “A Mãe eo Mar”, by Gonçalo Tocha, will be shown outdoors, on Saturday, September 15, at 21 pm, at the Fortaleza de Sagres, in Vila do Bispo.

This is the third session of the Portuguese Documentary Film Exhibition “Um Mar de Filmes!”, an event of the DiVaM 2018 program – Dynamization and Valorization of Monuments, which is taking place on Saturdays in September in three monuments in the Western Algarve – Sagres Fortress, Alcalar Megalithic Monuments and Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe Chapel.

Bearing in mind that the films are shown at night and outdoors, it is advisable to wear warm clothes and blankets.

«On the path of a lost real myth, filmed on the beach of Vila Chã, in Vila do Conde, we look for the women of the sea, called “women-arrais”, or “fisherwomen”, considered unique in the whole world. But where are they? And where are the 120 artisanal fishing boats? Here, they are represented by Glória, the only woman who, after so many years and so many adversities, still dares to face the sea», describes the Regional Directorate of Culture, promoter of DiVaM.

“Through interviews and several conversations where the past is remembered, the director reveals how these women defied tradition and obtained fishing licenses, dedicating their lives to a predominantly male profession. Of the 120, there are nine boats left and a single fisherwoman. In a land of brave people of the sea, the passion for fishing is filmed, the passion for the sea», added the same entity.

The exhibition “A Sea of Films!” a project by Rizoma Lab – Associação Cultural and has the artistic coordination and curatorship of Luísa Baptista, technical production by Pedro Glória and has Carolina Rufino and Diogo Vilhena as associate programmers. The initiative has the collaboration of the Municipal Museum of Portimão / Portimão City Council and the support of Quinta do Barranco Longo.

Until the end of the month, it will still be possible to watch the film “Pedra e Lime”, by Catarina Alves Costa, to be shown on September 22 at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, and the documentary “Medronho all Days – Unedo Omnes Dies”, by Sílvia Coelho and Paulo Raposo, on the 29th of September, in the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar.

The last session, which "accompanies the unique knowledge of the process of production of brandy of medronho and its presence throughout the region of Monchique", will be attended by the Coral Group of the Confraria de Medronho and will be followed by a tasting of brandy made from this fruit.
