Castro Marim residents who want to quit smoking can count on the support of the Chamber of Castro Marim for at least another year. The Municipality's Anti-Tobacco Program was renewed for another year, after having helped around 300 more people to quit cigarettes.
"By decision of the last council meeting, the municipal program to combat smoking was renewed for another year, in a protocol with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Castro Marim, in the amount of 12 thousand euros", announced the municipality.
In addition to the "permanent availability of a doctor and psychologist", this program also guarantees that medication is free.
Since 2015, when the measure was launched, around 45 thousand euros have been invested and more than 300 people have been served. But "the gains, whether in terms of health or in the economy of ex-smokers, greatly increase this amount."
“Give up smoking is a smart decision that gives you more years of life, more quality of life and more money in your wallet. The success rate of this initiative, for those who complete the treatment, is currently 86%, a value much higher than the national average», considered Francisco Amaral, physician and mayor of Castro Marim.
Promoting a healthier life has been one of Francisco Amaral's bets since he arrived at the Chamber of Castro Marim.
In addition to this smoking cessation program, another program to combat obesity was launched «with the participation of about 150 people and which brings together different technical approaches, including medical consultations, nutrition, psychology and sports».
