The Municipal Emergency Plan was activated in Monchique at 1:10 am, due to the fire that broke out yesterday in the early afternoon, in the Perna da Negra area.

Rui André, mayor of Monchique, in statements to Antena 1, said that the Municipal Emergency Plan was activated because it was «the most cautious way to approach the solution. I have already transmitted it to the minister [of Internal Administration]».

According to the Civil Protection website, the fire remains active on two fronts and this morning, 696 operatives supported by 178 vehicles are fighting the flames. With daybreak, the air resources were able to operate again and there are already four light helicopters in the theater of operations and one medium plane.

In addition to the firefighters, six army platoons have also been activated.
