Works for the construction of a pedestrian walkway between Figueira and Mexilhoeira Grande will start

Works require traffic to be diverted along the EN125

The construction works of a pedestrian walkway between Figueira and Mexilhoeira Grande will begin, announced today the Municipality of Portimão. In total, more than 280 thousand euros will be invested.

According to the municipality, the contract execution period is 90 days, "so it is expected that it will be completed by the end of the year".

The area that will receive works is developed between the junction of Estrada Fonte and Rua Main da Figueira and the intersection with Rua de São Pedro on the Mexilhoeira Grande side, extending approximately 730 meters.

The Municipality of Portimão emphasizes that “the existing constructions greatly affect the development of the work, and imply that it has to resort to the ban on car circulation, with the exception of those residing in the area”. This means that the car connection between Figueira and Mexilhoreira (and vice versa), during the works, must be made via the N125.

The new pedestrian walkway will be 1,6m wide and will be built a part to the north of the road and another part to the south. A crosswalk will also be built “to allow the pedestrian route to always be made along the sidewalk”.

The jetty that crosses the Ribeira do Farelo will also be widened and “three pockets have been defined to allow buses to stop outside the carriageway, contrary to what happens today”, adds the City Council of Portimão.

A rainwater collection pipeline will also be built, “as a result of the work to create the sidewalk, and because the street and its marginal areas that will be occupied with the new sidewalk, which now function as a water line”.

This pipeline starts at the intersection of Estrada Fonte and Rua de São Pedro, which will have to be connected to Ribeira do Farelo. in the ditch to rebuild.

The road pavement will also be completely renovated.
