FIMA – Algarve International Music Festival will close with the show “As Mil e Uma Noites”, on Thursday, 24th May, at 21 pm, at Teatro das Figuras, in Faro. The renowned British conductor Peter Stark will conduct a reinforced Classical Orchestra of the South (OCS), in a concert where the Italian violinist Francesca Dego will also be present.

This concert, which explores the imagery of the book “As Mil e Uma Noites” and its protagonist Sherry, it will be special. From the outset by the internationally renowned guests, but also by the fact that the OCS presents itself in a symphonic orchestra format, with around 50 musicians, almost double its normal composition.

«In this closing concert, as happened in the opening one, we decided to present a broader formation, a symphonic formation. I did the first one and now I have the honor of having my direction teacher and a great conductor doing this last show», framed Rui Pinheiro, artistic director of FIMA and principal conductor of OCS, in an interview with Sul Informação.

Conducting this great Southern Classical Orchestra will be a conductor who has already directed some of the most renowned formations in the world, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the English Chamber Orchestra, and who also distinguishes himself as a trainer in the field of orchestral conducting – he is a professor at the Royal College of Music in London.

It was, moreover, at the Royal College of Music in London that Rui Pinheiro was a student of the British conductor. «If I am where I am today, here at the Southern Classical Orchestra, I owe a lot to Peter Stark. He was someone with whom I learned a lot and a remarkable person for my activity», he said.

«This morning I was totally enraptured listening to the rehearsal, because it's great to remember all the lessons. Furthermore, Peter Stark is someone who has a very deep knowledge of what an orchestra is, how it works and how to get all these magical sounds out of it. It was good to kill nostalgia and relearn a little», the Portuguese conductor told our newspaper.

Peter Stark is also currently “the principal conductor of the European Union Orchestra, which does all the preparation for the EU youth orchestra” and principal conductor of the Arabian Youth Orchestra.

Francesca Dego is an Italian violinist, «with an incredible career, who records for the best labels, such as Deutsche Gramophon, and has performed with the best orchestras in the world».

FIMA's artistic director confessed to the Sul Informação that «it was very difficult to catch her, to be here with us for a week to prepare this concert».

Francesca Dego will accompany OCS in the first part of the show, in which the work “Concerto for Violin” by Sibelius will be performed, “one of the landmarks of the concertante work for violin”.

In the second part of the concert, the piece “Sheherazade”, by Rimsky-Korsakov, “one of the most fantastic works in the orchestral repertoire” will be presented.

«The “Sheherazade” is a work based on the tales of “The Thousand and One Nights”. It is an extremely sensory work, which tells us several stories. It's an absolutely incredible piece, very well orchestrated and with sublime sounds. I think the general public will like this piece very much», framed the artistic director of FIMA.

“We have a great conductor, a great soloist and an exceptional repertoire. All the ingredients for an excellent closing concert of the festival have been brought together”, concluded Rui Pinheiro.

Tickets for the show cost 20 euros and can be purchased online. FIMA – Algarve International Music Festival is organized by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, with the support of the “365Algarve” program.
