ABC – Loulé Active Life will be a hub linked to health, research, training and innovation and «will strengthen healthcare in the Algarve, with a great impact on quality tourism».

The construction and equipping of the facilities starts "in 2019, with completion scheduled for 2020".

The Municipality of Loulé signed a cooperation protocol with the Academic Center for Research and Biomedical Training of Algarve – ABC (Algarve Biomedical Center), with the aim of cooperating in the fields of health, research, training and innovation.

This collective project represents "a strong commitment to innovation and regional development, which will articulate several projects of innovation, research, support and promotion of health and quality of life, in a modern and adequate structure to be built for this purpose", explains the Câmara de Loulé .

The goal is for this to be a contemporary building, with about 4000 square meters of construction area, with reduced environmental impact and located in a strategic area with good accessibility, and that bets on energy sustainability, renewable energies, the green and environmental concept. in self-sufficient management.

ABC – Loulé Active Life will integrate the following structures: Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation Agency, establishing a branch of the agency in Loulé, in a decentralization initiative, the Biobanco do ABC, with interconnection between the University Hospital Center of Algarve, the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine, as well as the Center of Biomedical Research of the University of Algarve, fundamental to the development of innovative therapeutics and which will be integrated in the Iberian and European Network of Biobanks.

In addition, it will also integrate the Algarve Experimental Surgery Center, the Algarve and Alentejo Pharmacovigilance Unit, the Center for the Study of Efficiency and Safety of Medicines and Medical Devices (in partnership with INFARMED), innovative in national terms, the headquarters of Project LIFE – Algarve Coração Seguro, a project that aims to strengthen the image of tourism in the Algarve, as a safe health destination, through the introduction of training in Basic Life Support and Automatic External Defibrillation in the regional hotel network and the creation of a network of Automatic External Defibrillators, the Support Center for Active Aging and Quality of Life (Integrated in the European Reference Network of ACTIVE AGING) and the Certified Health Care Center for Tourism (in partnership with the General Directorate of Health), a pilot project that will provide tourists with a list of the nearest certified institutions by specialization areas.

Finally, it is also there that the Meeting Center Active Life will be installed, which will lead to the placing of the Algarve in the center of scientific discussion and international innovation.

For Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, “this is an enormous challenge for the region to which the municipality of Loulé shows great openness”.
