The colloquium “Between keeping everything and losing nothing – The role of Municipal Archives in safeguarding Local Memory” will commemorate the International Day of Archives and the 70th anniversary of the creation of the International Council of Archives, on the 9th of June, in Auditorium of the Convento de S. José, in Lagoa.

Organized with the aim of disseminating the importance of archives around the world to local populations, this colloquium starts, in parallel, a new thematic cycle: “Lagoa for a cause”, revealing a moment of reflection on what whether it can and/or should be conserved, in the sense of fighting forgetting and preserving memory (in its various scales: national, regional, local).

The initiative is aimed at archivists, librarians and documentalists, historians, archaeologists, museologists, students, teachers, and all those who deal, directly or indirectly, with the Archives and the preservation and dissemination of history and local and regional memory.

“Lagoa, educational city” will thus receive a range of guests in the field of Information Sciences, including names such as José Pacheco Pereira, Armando Malheiro da Silva, António Maranhão Peixoto, Paula Ucha, Cristiana Vieira de Freitas, Abel Rodrigues, Alexandra Lourenço, André Melícias, Maria Luísa Pereira or Tiago Barão.

The opening session, at 9:30 am, will be attended by Francisco Martins, mayor of Lagoa, and Maria Alexandra Silva Lourenço, president of the Portuguese Association of Librarians, Archivists and Documentalists (BAD).

This is followed by the opening conference: “Saving the memory of the past as a weapon for the democracy of the present”, by historian José Pacheco Pereira, who will moderate the panel at 11:00 am: “The transversality of archival information: the challenge of safeguarding central memory and local”, by Paula Cristina Ucha, from the Library and Archives of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Economy.

At 11:30 am, Cristiana Vieira de Freitas, from Ponte de Lima Municipal Archive, will speak on “Access to memory in Municipal Archives 2.0: from digitization to digital preservation”, and the former director of the Municipal Archive of Viana do Castelo António Maranhão Peixoto will end the morning with: “Document Management and Memory: What Future in Municipal Archives?”.

At 15 pm, André Melícias, from the Center for Classical Studies at the University of Lisbon, will make an intervention on “Church Archives as places of memory, identity and action: perspectives on their challenges and opportunities”, moderated by Armando Malheiro da Silva. Abel Rodrigues, from the University of Porto, will question another approach to the same subject: “Personal and Family Archives and Municipal Archives: a logical or paradoxical relationship?”.

The afternoon will also be marked by the joint intervention of Maria Luísa Pereira and Tiago Barão, from the District and Municipal Archives of Faro, respectively, and the Algarve Archives Network on: “The safeguarding of association archives: the case of the collaboration of municipalities in the district of Faro and the Algarve Archives Network in the DGLAB project”.

“Documentary Heritage and Organic Information: problems and challenges for the future of Municipal Archives”, by Armando Malheiro da Silva, from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, will close this cycle of interventions at 17 pm, the conclusions of which will be presented by the president of BAD at the closing session.

Registration for this colloquium is free, but mandatory, until the 7th of June. here
