João Fernandes has just been elected as the new president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), after being the most voted in the elections that took place this Friday afternoon, May 11th.

The current vice-president of RTA was elected by the General Assembly of this entity, which has 32 elements, including all the Chambers of the Algarve, a representative of the Government, business associations and unions.

But, in these elections, only 31 of the 32 elements voted because the Portuguese Association of Casinos (APC) did not appear in the election.

In the election for the Executive Committee, List A, headed by João Fernandes, got 17 votes, against 11 for list B, headed by the current president of RTA Desidério Silva. There were three blank votes.

After the results were announced, João Fernandes' reaction was discreet. In fact, as soon as he learned that he was elected, the new president of the RTA made a point of addressing Desidério Silva to congratulate him. After all, they have been part of the same team for years.

Shortly after the scrutiny ended, João Fernandes did not want to anticipate what his mandate will be, not least because his inauguration will only take place within three months, in mid-August.

“At this point, I will limit myself to congratulating the Assembly on this democratic act and will not comment further, bearing in mind that the mandate lasts until August. Until then, I will have time to talk about some of the reasons for my candidacy and the future exercise of the position», said the new president of RTA, to journalists.

As for the fact of not having celebrated the victory and having made a point of greeting Desidério Silva in the first place, João Fernandes emphasizes the serene manner in which the entire process took place.

“The electoral act and even the period that preceded it was marked by great caution in relation to the way in which the RTA left this process. Whenever there are two candidates, there are, of course, different perspectives. But more important than the lists or their protagonists, is the Tourism Region and the destination», he illustrated.

“I salute my opponents for the serenity with which the act took place and for the healthy good manners with which, in the end, everyone greeted each other. It is a good sign that there is a lot of good work to be done in the future and that we have everyone”, he concluded.

João Fernandes will be accompanied in the direction of the RTA by Maria de Fátima Catarina Coelho (vice-president) and by Nuno da Silva Monteiro (member).

Elidérico Viegas, who headed the list unique to this body (A), was elected chairman of the Board of the General Assembly, succeeding Álvaro Viegas.
