Computational intelligence and control and telematics. These are the themes that serve as the motto for CESCIT (Conference on Embedded Systems, Computational Intelligence and Telematics in Control), the international conference that, from 6 to 8 June, brings specialists in these areas to the University of Algarve's Gambelas Campus ( UAlg), in Faro.

This is an initiative sponsored by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and whose chairman Professor António Ruano, from the Faculty of Science and Technology at UAlg.

In an interview with Sul Informação, the academic explained that IFAC is "divided into several technical committees (39 at the moment), responsible for each specialty area within control engineering." In this case, CESCIT is part of the CC3 – Computers, Cognition and Communication committee and, therefore, will discuss issues related to this.

And what will be the themes under analysis? Basically, everything related to computational intelligence and control and telematics.

«Currently we hear a lot about smart industries (smart industries) and smart transport. For all these applications, methodologies are used that fit within computational intelligence», exemplified Professor António Ruano.

Computational control, on the other hand, is related to «embedded systems, such as mobile phones». «All these methodologies, how this is done and how they communicate are included in computational control».

As for telematics, «it has to do with the Internet of things, the connection of the various systems through the Internet, whether it is wi-fi or wired. Everything fits inside this hat», framed.

To address all these issues, there will be lectures on all three themes, as well as a special session on intelligent building control or intelligent control in industry.

And this is a topic that can be of interest to a wide audience because, «nowadays, any institution or company wants to be qualified as smart», explained the academic.

In this conference, it is expected the participation of people coming from India, United States of America, Spain, Italy, France, United Kingdom and Switzerland.

In the opinion of Professor António Ruano, “it is good for the University's reputation” to host this initiative. Also the students, who will be invited to participate, have here a «good opportunity to see how this type of international event is held», he considered.

Even because, he concludes, CESCIT will discuss “the most important advances” in these three areas. “We have an excellent batch of guest speakers and we are organizing discussion sessions, with the participation of speakers coming from the most important companies”.
