The Minister of Culture will visit the town of Mértola next Tuesday, March 6, with the aim of meeting with local entities and getting to know the cultural heritage.

The program of the visit, which will start at 11:XNUMX am, includes a meeting with Chamber President Jorge Rosa, Regional Director of Cultural Heritage, Ana Paula Amendoeira, Director General of Cultural Heritage, Paula Silva, and Director of the Archaeological Field of Mértola, Cláudio Torres.

Then, the minister Luís Filipe Castro Mendes, will visit some monuments of the village-museum, namely the Castle, the Mother Church, the Alcáçova and the replica of an Islamic house, and also the Casa Cor de Rosa, where they were recently found statues from the Roman period, of monumental dimensions.

Last year, archaeological excavations in Mértola unveiled a set of monumental statuary from the Roman period, from the XNUMXst century.

Altogether, there are four large statues, discovered four meters deep in the Casa Cor de Rosa, in the heart of the historic centre.

This important find, as well as the existing structure at the site, may indicate, according to the team of archaeologists, the existence of a Roman temple, which will lead to new knowledge of the entire Roman occupation in Portugal.
