A collapse of a cliff that this morning, at 9:00 am, occurred between the beaches of Vau and Careanos, on the coast of Portimão, it reached "200 cubic meters or 500 tons" of rocks, being "the largest verified this year so far", he told the Sul Informação the regional director of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

Sebastião Teixeira, who this morning took a flight to photograph the entire coast, "from Vila Real de Santo António and Praia da Luz", explained that this "collapse is normal", not least because, he stressed, "cliffs are born to fall" .

“The cliffs either fall during a storm of this magnitude or in the five days after the storm ends. The storm ended yesterday and this is the first landslide on record. We are still in the squall hangover,” he added.

The regional responsible for the APA also added, to the Sul Informação, that «the damages already registered on the Algarve coast indicate that there were broken accesses to the beach, namely in Alvor, but in other beaches as well, and ten landslides, in several points of the coast».

As for the collapse of Praia do Vau, especially because it was located in an area where, during high tide, there is no sand, Sebastião Teixeira said that «there will be no intervention, the stones will stay there. First, because if there are rocks there, people will not go to that danger zone. Afterwards, because they protect the base of the cliff».

As for the fact that the storm ate sand on the beaches, the director of the APA stated that “the sea will bring that sand back. It is not known how long it will take, but there are already beaches where you can see the replenishment».
