The PCP/Algarve defended that “it is enough to say enough” to the demolitions of houses on the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. The Algarve communists reaffirmed their commitment "for the requalification of all the population centers of the barrier islands" and point the finger at the current PS Government and its predecessor (PSD/CDS-PP), who accuse of wanting to expel the islanders to deliver that territory to private.
«The recent announcement of a new administrative takeover and subsequent demolition of more houses in the nuclei of the Farole dos Hangares is the continuation of a process, initiated by the PSD/CDS Government and continued by the current PS Government, whose ultimate objective, in the name of defending environmental values, is to gradually try to expel local communities from the Ria Formosa barrier islands , in order to hand over this valuable territory to the interests of economic groups, as is also the case in a large part of the Algarve coast», considered the Direction of the Regional Organization of the PCP do Algarve.
The communist party recalled the warnings it made about some of the electoral promises made during the campaign for the 2017 Local Elections and considers that this new wave of demolitions proves it right.
"Despite the various promises of requalification and investment in that territory, the only tangible thing that has actually advanced were the demolitions and it is in the continuation of demolitions - in all nuclei - that, like the previous PSD/CDS Government, so does the current Government is committed, even if promises remain for the future. The PCP reaffirms its commitment to the populations of the barrier islands in supporting their legitimate struggle in defense of the right to live and produce in the Ria Formosa», the communists stated.
In the view of this party, the PS Government "does wrong" in not recognizing "the housing nuclei of the barrier islands of Ria Formosa and their economic, social and cultural value", as well as in assuming "positions and attitudes according to the electoral periods or of the organs of political power in which it has representation, saying one thing in the Algarve and doing another in the Government and in the Assembly of the Republic».
The PCP promises “to intervene in all plans and in a coherent way, whether in the Algarve or in the Assembly of the Republic”.
