The bill for water and sanitation will be reduced by 10% in Lagos, starting in March, to "relieve family budgets" and "energize local economic activity".

The introduction of changes to the new tariff for water supply, sanitation and urban solid waste of the Municipality of Lagos, which will come into force next month, was approved at the Council meeting on 7 February.

The tariff for 2018, which already has the favorable opinion of ERSAR – Regulatory Authority for Water Services, reflects a reduction in the water bill of at least 10%.

“The objective is to continue the policies to reduce tariffs in the water and waste sectors, promoting the reduction of costs and increasing the efficiency of the three sectors without penalizing the final consumer”, says the Câmara de Lagos.

This is not a reduction in all prices charged, but rather “a price adjustment that, in general, results in a decrease in the overall value of each citizen's bill, thus fulfilling an electoral promise of the municipal executive”.

The changes are related to the reduction of Availability Tariffs for Water and Waste Services and the change in the Variable Tariff for water (in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th brackets) in the case of Domestic consumers and in the Variable Tariff for non-domestic consumers .

There is also a set of exemptions and reductions provided for in the Water, Sanitation and Solid Waste Regulations, which benefit pensioners and retirees, families with two dependent minors, large families, families in which the woman is pregnant, establishments of Public Education, Social Solidarity Institutions, churches, local authorities, recreational and cultural sports communities and firefighters.
