Father and son were rescued yesterday afternoon from a well 20 meters deep, in Vale da Figueira, parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, by Firefighters of Portimão.

The 7-year-old boy had fallen into the well, and the 41-year-old father jumped in, with the help of a cable, to try to save his son. He ended up managing to keep him afloat until the arrival of the Portimão Fire Brigade Special Rescue team, who later rescued the father and son, safe and sound.

According to Firefighters from Portimão, the alert was received at 15:45 pm, at the Municipal Center for Civil Protection and Relief Operations in Portimão, via 112/CDOS de Faro.

Immediately, «recognizing the complexity of the demanding rescue operation», a team of the Special Rescues Group was dispatched, at first alarm, which is on duty throughout the 24 hours, with the Technical Rope Rescue and Water Rescue services , «having the first differentiated means arrived at the place around 15:56», that is, just 11 minutes after the dispatch.

At the site, "water rescue devices "Throwbags" were used to keep the victims afloat, and rescue action started immediately using rope rescue techniques.

The child was rescued from the well in nine minutes, having come out "with only minor injuries".

Father and son received assistance from pre-hospital teams on site and, after being evaluated by the medical team of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), were transported to Hospital de Portimão.

In parallel, according to the Fire Department of Portimão, it was still necessary to give assistance to another man, a 51-year-old relative, "out of anxiety", who was also taken to hospital.

The Mobile Emergency Psychological Intervention Unit (UMIPE) of INEM, meanwhile sent to the site, also provided support to the other family members present.

But despite the danger, the situation ended up having a happy ending.

A total of 22 operators and 10 vehicles participated in this operation, together with the Portimão Fire Department, INEM and GNR.

Teams of divers from the Firefighters of Portimão were also called in, but they did not intervene, “in view of the success of the rescue in the 1st approach”.
