Portimão and immigrant families will once again open the doors of their homes to welcome their neighbors, on November 26, at 13 pm. Portimão once again joins the “Família do Lado” initiative, in which the host family offers “a convivial lunch typical of its original culture, as a way of welcoming the “other”».
This is a transnational initiative promoted by the High Commission for Migration, which assumes itself «as an act of genuine welcome on the part of those who wish to receive in their home and those who aspire to be welcomed, starting social relations that generate bridges between cultures» , according to the City Council of Portimão.
“The challenge is for a family to accept to welcome in their home a family they do not know, forming pairs of families (one immigrant or refugee and the other indigenous) for a lunch- get-together typical of the culture of the host family”, explained the municipality.
The social lunches take place all at the same time in all cities of the three participating countries: Portugal, Spain and the Czech Republic.
Registration is open for immigrant families and autochthonous families who want to participate “and contribute to the process of integration of immigrants residing in Portimão”.
Interested parties may register until November 22, as host family or visiting family, by emailing [email protected] or by calling 282 470818.
Registration is also open for Assistant - “volunteer/sponsor”, a crucial element in the accompaniment of each pair of families, who will provide support before and during the lunch they will also be part of.
