Singer Carlão, ex-Pacman of “Da Weasel”, was this Monday, 27 November, at the Municipal Auditorium of Albufeira, to sensitize students from schools in the municipality to the issue of racial, ethnic and xenophobia discrimination.

Young people are being called to participate in the Municipal Plan for Multiculturalism, organized by the Municipality of Albufeira, through CLAIM (Local Support Center for the Integration of Migrants).

Carlão, in this initiative, presented some themes that are part of the book “Livres e Iguais”, which was then offered to the more than 300 students present.

The work is an integral part of the pedagogical project with the same name, authored by Carlão, «which aims to promote interculturality, having been developed in partnership with the company “Betweien”. This project has the pedagogical support of Helena Costa, author of the challenges, exercises and information contained in the book, so that such matters can be explored by the students», explains the City Council of Albufeira.

In addition to a moment of dramatic expression by actress Iris, Carlão spoke with the youngsters and sang the themes “Clara”, or “essay on Melanina”, about racial discrimination, and also “They asked me for a song” about "the difference that inferiorizes and the equality that characterizes", which aims to warn against ethnic discrimination and, finally, the "Fado do Acossado", about "those who leave in the dark night", that is, the refugees, this being the a theme against xenophobia.

Carlão said that «we all have to fight against prejudices that, many times, we do not even imagine that
reside in us. With this job, I realized that I had mine too».

Carlos Silva e Sousa, mayor of Albufeira, was also present and said he was "delighted with Carlão's talent in these topics that can show our noblest part, that is, knowing how to fight to be equals".

This idea had been reinforced at the beginning by Ana Pífaro, councilor responsible for Social Action of the Albufeira Council, who told the students that «breaking taboos, prejudices and all kinds of barriers between understanding the human species is in everyone's hands. We must take advantage of this power and this capacity that we have».

Carlão ended this meeting with the interpretation of the theme “Os tais”, which “broke the auditorium to a boil”.
