David Santos does not hide that "the results were not as expected", but, even so, the president of the PSD/Algarve told the Sul Informação which «the main objective», that of keeping all the Chambers that already had a Social-Democratic presidency, «has been achieved».
If at the level of Municipal Councils everything remained the same, the same cannot be said of the elected officials. From 2013 to 2017, the Social Democrats, alone or in coalition, lost 5 councilors in a total of 16 Algarve Chambers. Also with regard to total votes, there was a decrease of around 4 thousand, even with the creation of more coalitions, namely with the CDS-PP.
This downward trend was quite noticeable in some municipalities, but in others the opposite was true. In two councils, the PSD not only won the re-election of mayors, but also absolute majorities that did not exist before.
«I want to emphasize here the case of Faro, where we got re-election, something that had only happened twice, and then with an absolute majority. In 12 terms, the Chamber of Faro it had ten presidents», he stressed.
In this case, as in Albufeira, where Carlos Silva e Sousa assured the councilor that he needed to be in the majority in the Chamber, as well as in Vila Real de Santo António, Monchique and Castro Marim, the results «show what our presidents of Chamber have been doing it», according to David Santos.
For the leader of the Algarve Social Democrats, these elections were "marked by great stability" in the Algarve, bearing in mind that all current mayors were re-elected and that also in VRSA, where Luís Gomes could no longer stand as a candidate, the social-democrat majority remained, having been elected Conceição Cabrita.
The most complicated situation was even that of Castro Marim, where the majority won in 2013 was lost. “In that council, there was a candidate who had already been our mayor who decided to withdraw from the party and present an independent candidacy. He ended up being elected councilor, but we won the Chamber", he said, not hiding, even so, that this type of situation "is always complicated".
As for the other municipalities in the Algarve, ten of which remained in the hands of the PS and the other in the hands of the CDU, the same logic prevailed that allowed the PSD to strengthen its position in almost all the municipalities where it was in power: the stability chosen by the electorate .
According to David Santos, the internal assessment of the results of these elections has yet to be done and will take place at the next meeting of the Regional Political Commission of the PSD.
