The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) came to say what everyone had already felt: that last July was very hot and very dry. Days 2 to 4 and the period from July 12 to 17 had very high values ​​of the maximum temperature.

In mainland Portugal, the 13th of July was the hottest, with an average temperature of 27.3°C (+ 5.0°C compared to normal), 36.4°C maximum temperature (+ 7.7°C compared to normal) and 18.2 °C minimum temperature (+2.5°C compared to normal).

In those periods, maximum temperature values ​​equal to or higher than 30°C (hot days) were observed in more than 80% of the meteorological stations and maximum temperature values ​​equal to or higher than 35°C (very hot days) in more than 50 % of stations.

On these days, maximum temperature values ​​above 40°C were recorded in the interior regions, with the highest temperature value, 46.2°C, being recorded in the Alentejo locality of Amareleja on the 13th.

On the other hand, adds the IPMA, there was a heat wave from 12 to 17 July lasting 6/7 days in the interior regions.

IPMA adds that the average value of the average air temperature was 0.56°C higher than the normal value, with the average value of the maximum air temperature, 30.22°C, being the 11° highest since 1931, with an anomaly of +1.5°C . However, the mean minimum air temperature, 15.26°C, was 0.4°C lower than the normal value.

Regarding rainfall, the month of July was classified as dry, with an average rainfall of 5.3 mm, which corresponds to 38% of the average value.

According to the meteorological drought index – PDSI, at the end of July the meteorological drought situation continues in almost the entire territory of mainland Portugal, with an increase in the interior North region and an increase in the interior of Alentejo.

At the end of this month, about 79% of the territory was in severe (69.6%) and extreme (9.2%) drought.
