The Municipality of Silves launched, for the first time, a free time occupation program aimed at young people in the municipality and these joined in force. The initiative had 59 participants, a number that, the municipality confessed, exceeded initial expectations and forced a readjustment in the number of vacancies and the services involved.

Over five weeks (June 26 and July 28), each corresponding to a shift, young people aged 13 to 17 were integrated into municipal services to help. Participants were divided into the sectors of Youth, Sports, Education (Kindergarten No. 1 and No. 2 in Silves) and Archeology (Conservation and Restoration Workshop), and by Quinta Pedagógica de Silves.

«All fulfilled the stipulated timetables, tasks and rules, in order to receive a weekly grant of 50 euros, in the form of a shopping voucher at the Algarve Shopping and at the FNAC store», according to the Câmara de Silves.

With this measure, the municipality of Silvense wanted to «provide an alternative in the healthy occupation of free time, seeking to motivate those involved to support the community and for active, responsible and conscious social participation».

The young people were accompanied by 11 technicians, «all of them equally committed to providing these young people with a unique and enriching experience».
