32 Praia Health Posts, distributed along the Algarve coast, are already operating until 3 September, in an initiative of the Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve, through a collaboration protocol with the Portuguese Red Cross.

The beach stations are intended to ensure nursing health care and respond to clinical situations that can be treated on site, or, if necessary, refer the user to a more appropriate health unit.

Its office hours are extended between 10:00 and 19:00 every day. Seven of these posts will remain in operation until September 17th.

According to ARS, the need for beach stations is well expressed in the numbers of previous years: on average, around ten thousand people are served during the summer months.

The "large majority" of cases are "resolved and properly treated on the spot by the nurse, avoiding unnecessary travel, and often functioning as a point of clarification and screening for the correct referral to the most appropriate health service."

«Since 2010, the resources allocated to the Beach Posts have been enhanced through telephone communication between the nurses at the beach posts and the INEM Urgent Patients Guidance Center (CODU), allowing an adequate integration with the pre- hospital», adds the ARS.

Reinforcement of service at the Algarve Health Centers

But the summer also brings an increase in attendance at the Health Centers in the Algarve. Thus, in addition to the normal operating period of the health units, the ARS Algarve, in conjunction with the three Health Center Groups (ACES) in the region, will extend the hours of nursing care and reinforce the open consultation, aimed at users (residents and non-residents) with acute illness, «in the municipalities where there is usually a greater influx of tourists».
