The first 20 days of the month of June have been characterized by "high values ​​of the maximum temperature, much higher than the normal values ​​for this month", stresses the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), in a statement.

These high temperatures were felt in particular from the 7th onwards, due to a very hot and dry air mass, especially on the 17th and 18th of June, «when the previous maximum temperature for this were exceeded. month, in almost all the territory, with the exception of the North and Center coast regions».

From the 1st to the 20th of June, the average maximum air temperature in mainland Portugal was 31.2 °C, which is 5.8 °C higher than normal.

The mean temperature value was 23.3 °C, about 3.9 °C higher than normal, while the mean minimum air temperature value was 15.5 °C, ie 2 °C higher than normal.

The IPMA recalls that Saturday, June 17, was even the hottest day, with an average temperature of 29.4 °C (+10.0 °C compared to normal), 39.1 °C maximum temperature (+13.8 °C compared to normal ) and 19.7 °C minimum temperature (+6.2 °C compared to normal).

The hottest night occurred on the 19th, with a minimum temperature value of 20.1 °C, with a deviation of +6.6 °C (in relation to the normal for the month of June).

The Institute also emphasizes that, on June 6th and 7th, there was the beginning of a heat wave registered in the meteorological stations in the interior of the country.

From the 10th and 11th, this heat wave covered the remaining regions of the interior of the territory and, from the 15th on, some places in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo and the interior of Baixo Alentejo.

According to the meteorological drought index PDSI , on the 18th of June the meteorological drought situation in mainland Portugal remains, with an aggravation in relation to the 31st of May in the whole territory, with the increase of the areas in the mainland. severe and extreme drought classes.

On June 18, about 80% of the territory was in severe and extreme meteorological drought.
