The «ancestral tradition» of decorating the “Maios” dolls with the typical spring flowers returns to the streets on the 1st of May, between Marim and Alfandanga, along the EN125, but also in other places in the interior of the municipality of Olhão .

And, as has been the habit for 33 years in a row, Futebol Clube de Bias organizes the competition of Maios, with the delivery of prizes taking place on the 7th of May, at a ball at the club's headquarters.

The initiative is always aimed at showing the dolls, which are built in secret for months by the population residing in these places, with themes always linked to the locality and the products of the land, and where flowers are not lacking.

«This tradition makes thousands of people pass by Olhão on this day, to see the authentic works of art, which are only shown on May 1st», tells the Chamber of Olhão.

«The origin of the Maios, or Maias, tradition is lost in time and can have several explanations. According to some, Maia was a rye straw doll, around which people danced all night on the first day of May», concludes the municipality of Olho.
