The pedestrian bridge that will allow you to pass, on dry foot, from Alcoutim to Sanlúcar, on the other side of the Guadiana, is already installed and many people look at it without hiding their desire to take the road. After all, this is the first time this is possible and all thanks to Smuggling Festival, which started today, March 24th, and lasts until Sunday, March 26th, in Alcoutim and Sanlúcar.

The first day of the event was dedicated to better understanding what smuggling was and making the historical framework of an activity that, despite being illicit, was a way of life on the edge of the Baixo Guadiana and often the only way to avoid the misery.

In fact, it is the historical legacy and not the illegality of the smuggling activity that is being highlighted and celebrated over the course of three days.

From tomorrow, March 25th, there will be a strong animation component, with extras walking down the street in formal clothes, recalling the times when the clandestine crossing of the river was a way of life for many and placed on opposite sides of an imaginary barrier to backpackers and tax guards, although in some cases both even had family ties.
