The one that was the biggest ever-green magnolia (Magnolia grandifloraL.) from Europe died last year in Monchique, but the mountain village doesn't want her to be forgotten.

This Tuesday, on Arbor Day, six magnolias were planted, two of them near the ruins of the Convent of Nossa Senhora do Convento, where, for centuries, the tree that was one of the ex-libris of the municipality once stood. O Sul Informação accompanied this activity, which was attended by around 80 students from the 1st cycle of Escola de São Pedro.

These children, unlike other Monchique generations, will not have the opportunity to have their first kiss by that tree or to try to hug its trunk hand in hand, but Rui André, mayor of Monchique wants them to keep memories too. of the Monchique magnolia.

What's left of the Convent's Magnolia

«We wanted to mark the day with an outstanding moment for the council. Last year, we had the death of the magnolia tree, which began to show pathologies ten years ago. After many efforts to recover it, even using specialized technicians, it was not possible. Given its importance, as it was classified as the largest magnolia in Europe, we believe that we should not only honor it, but also make its memory forever associated with this land and this place", explains the mayor.

For that, «it was decided to commemorate this day with the planting of a young magnolia, in the same place, so that in a few years' time we will continue to have a magnolia in this place».

In addition to the two trees near the convent, two magnolias were also planted at Escola EB 23 Manuel do Nascimento and another two at Quinta da Vila, near the Municipal Swimming Pools.

The children who participated in the activities did not only take their memories home, as they also received a symbolic object, made of Magnolia do Convento wood, and a small vase with two seeds, «so they can plant a magnolia like this in their houses», concluded the mayor.
