Culinary demonstrations around winter tomatoes and potatoes, a community lunch and a musical meeting with the “Moçoilas”, all of this topped off with a walk through the hill after lunch. This is the program promoted in the village of Mealha, near Cachopo, on Saturday, March 18, as part of the “Mediterranean Diet all year round” project, promoted by the Municipal Museum of Tavira.

The initiative starts at 10:30 am on Saturday, with a cooking demonstration around winter tomatoes and potatoes, with Margarida Vargues (cook and biologist), and another cooking demonstration of the “potatoes kitchen with outside meats”, with the inhabitants of the Mealha.

The motto will be the “winter tomato”, also known as “hanging tomato” or “guard tomato”. Like other foods, the tomato, after being picked, is stored and preserved to last until the next harvest. The cold of the mountain in winter removes its color and accentuates its flavor.

Margarida Vargues will show the culinary possibilities of tomatoes and potatoes, how to cook these products for and with children, as a family, and how they are prepared in other areas of Mediterranean culture.

With the ladies of Mealha, participants will learn how to make a “potatoes kitchen with meat outside”, a potato soup flavored by the “winter tomato” and with a taste of meat, which is served separately.

There will be a meeting around the table with the “Moçoilas”, who go about “musical contraband” through the Serra do Caldeirão, and with whom you can come forward to play and sing.

If you still feel like it, the activity will end with a walk to get to know a little about daily life on the hill.

To participate in this initiative, it is mandatory to register with the Municipal Museum of Tavira, via email [email protected] or telephone 281 320 500 (ext. 2305).

But note that, in addition to a limited number of entries, the deadline is Thursday, March 16. Enrollments, which include the community lunch tasting, cost 10 euros for adults and 5 euros for children aged 6 and 12 years old.

The “Mediterranean Kitchens” session is jointly organized by the Municipality of Tavira and the Parish Council of Cachopo, coordinated by Luísa Ricardo (anthropologist, Municipal Museum of Tavira) and Otília Cardeira (president of the Parish Council of Cachopo) .

The “Mediterranean Kitchens” are part of the “Mediterranean Diet all year round” program promoted by the Municipal Museum of Tavira.

“Mediterranean Diet all year round” is a program of activities to safeguard the Mediterranean Diet, which aims to promote the multiple dimensions of the Mediterranean lifestyle and cultural landscape.

In 2017, it is intended, «from the perspective of sustainability (social, environmental, economic), to make known the productive landscapes, food, know-how and threats to its continuity», as well as «to explore (go more beyond), experience, taste».

The program includes tours of interpretation of the territory, cooking demonstrations (Mediterranean cuisines), film shows, art and craft workshops, among other activities, based on Mediterranean know-how.

The activities are promoted by the Municipal Museum of Tavira and rely on the collaboration of local inhabitants and partnerships with other institutions, integrating empirical and scientific knowledge.
