Associação In Loco received, for the second consecutive year, the award “Dryland Champions 2016” (Champions of the Arid Zones), given by the National Commission to Combat Desertification.

This is a United Nations initiative that annually distinguishes individuals, organizations or companies that have made practical and relevant contributions to sustainable land management.

According to In Loco, this distinction was awarded for the work developed within the scope of several projects such as the promotion of urban gardens in the Algarve, "which has allowed the occupation of vacant land for productive purposes, using the practice of organic agriculture", the organization short circuits of production and consumption of agrifood, such as local markets and PROVE, and the fight against food waste.

Although the award was awarded based on these projects, In Loco considers that «this award is the result of the 28-year work of the Association in the interior of the Algarve. This recognition not only distinguishes the entity, but also the local populations and entities that over this time have worked together with us».

This award received by In Loco has the motto “I am Part of the Solution” and focuses “above all on people, on their commitment and efforts to promote and improve the livelihoods of populations and the conditions of ecosystems affected by arid areas. desertification and drought'.

The “Dryland Champions” program emerged after the Rio+20 Conference, held in 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, in the context of which the United Nations recognized the need for actions to stop and reverse soil degradation, as an essential resource for Life.
