Students at the EB1 School and the Correeira Kindergarten, in Albufeira, at the Guia Basic School, at Colégio Nossa Senhora do Alto, in Faro, of the Basic School of Estômbar, of the Nobel International School Algarve, in Lagoa, from the Nova Terra Kindergarten, in Loulé, from the Tunis Kindergarten, from the Vila do Bispo EB1 and the EB2,3 School of Monte Gordo they want to be elected “Fruit Heroes” and, to that end, they created songs to “encourage adults to eat healthily”.

This project, whose full name is “Heróis da Fruta – Healthy School Snack”, aims to encourage children to share, through original songs – “Hinos da Fruta” – the lessons they learned about healthy eating habits.

Mário Silva, president of the Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity (APCOI) and mentor of the project, says that «each vote in any fruit anthem reverts as a donation to “Missão 1 Kilo de Ajuda”, a social fund that allows APCOI to distribute free weekly baskets in schools to support the inclusion of fruit in the school lunch for the most needy students in the country».

The president of this association also added that “all the people who vote for the fruit anthems will also be able to win fantastic prizes. There are over a thousand experiences to choose from for water parks, zoos, museums, aquariums, living science centers and amusement parks. In addition, there is a super prize: a dream trip to the Azores».

“Fruit Heroes – Healthy School Lunch” is, according to the organization, the “largest free health education program nationwide, with one of the highest success rates ever in infant nutrition education in Portugal. It is proven that the application of the project's pedagogical model increases, by at least 42%, the daily fruit consumption of the children who participate in it».

Voting can be done, until March 10th, on here, 80 finalist anthems will be selected: the 3 most voted, as well as the most shared of each district or autonomous region.

In this 2016/2017 school year, 53.399 students, from 2665 classes, 900 kindergartens and primary schools from all the country's districts, including the Madeira and Azores autonomous regions, participate in the project.
