Between the 26th and 29th of April, the University of Algarve will host the 2017 Iberian Zoo-Archeology Meeting (EZI2017) and the 5th Scientific Meeting of Archeomalacology of the Iberian Peninsula (5RCAPI), which will take place in the auditorium of the Faculty of Economics (building 9 ), Campus of Gambelas. At registration is open until March 15th.

This first Iberian Zoo-Archaeology Meeting aims to promote the dissemination, debate and transfer of knowledge of zooarchaeology in the Iberian context, as well as the creation of partnerships and knowledge networks between professionals (and their interdisciplinary partners) working on archaeofaunistic materials from Portugal and Spain.

The Scientific Meeting on Archeomalacology of the Iberian Peninsula (RCAPI), held for the first time in 2010, has a long tradition of disseminating zoo-archaeological studies on molluscs, echinoderms and crustaceans.

In its various editions, RCAPI has brought together researchers from different disciplines (pre-historians, historians, zoo-archaeologists, archaeologists, biologists, etc.) demonstrating its imminent interdisciplinarity.

These two events bring to the University of the Algarve a large number of specialists in Iberian zooarchaeology.

In the preliminary program, there are 76 oral presentations and 45 posters, on various themes around animals in an archaeological context, from Prehistory to the Modern Period, including human diets, funerary contexts, paleoenvironmental studies, the improvement of species, taphonomic processes and ethnozooarcheology.

Organized by the Center for the Study of Archeology, Arts and Heritage Sciences (CEAACP), by the Interdisciplinary Center for Archeology and Evolution of Human Behavior (ICArEHB) at UAlg and by UNIARQ – Center for Archeology of the University of Lisbon, these meetings have several partnerships and sponsorships, including the Mértola Archaeological Field, the Loulé City Council, the Municipality of Faro, the Algarve Archaeological Association and the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.
