The 17th Al-Mutamid Music Festival takes place on the 27th and 28th of January and the 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 18th of February and will take the music that was heard in the bazaars, medinas and palaces of the Gharb al-Andalus to Lagoa , Vila Real de Santo António, Silves, Albufeira, Loulé and Lagos.

This event, which aims to promote Arab-Andalusian and Oriental music, with performances by groups specialized in al-Andalus sounds, will also feature music and dance from the Middle East.

In addition, it is also an objective to pay homage to Al-Mutamid, who was born in Beja, in 1040, and was appointed governor of Silves at the age of 12 years.

In 1069 he acceded to the throne of Seville, the strongest kingdom among those that emerged in al-Andalus after the fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba. In 1088 he was dethroned by the Almoravids and confined in Agmat, south of Marrakech where he died in 1095. Al-Mutamid was also a poet. His tomb, preserved until today, has become a symbol of the most beautiful times in Al-Andalus.

In January 2000 the first edition of the Al-Mutamid Music Festival took place. This traveling musical event also emerged with the aim of «responding to the cultural scarcity then existing in the so-called low tourist season in the Algarve», according to the organization.

«17 years later, the cultural reality of the Algarve is quite different, however, the Al-Mutamid Music Festival kept its two initial objectives unchanged», he adds.

This festival is organized by Ibérica Eventos & Espectáculos. You can consult the official Facebook page here  The first concert takes place on January 27, at 21 pm, at the Convento de São José, in Lagoa, and will have as its theme the Afro-Arab music Muhsilwan. See the entire program below:
