The circus has always been associated with the Christmas and New Year festivities and this time, in Monchique, it will be with a show by Novo Circo that 2016 will say goodbye. But don't think this is just any circus.

It's about the show Maintenant or Never (Now or Never), which is brought to the highest town in the Algarve by the French company «Cheptel Aleikoum, Circa Tsuica». There will be two hours of trapeze, trampoline, bicycle acrobatics in unstable balances, music, lots of music, sweets, imagination and contemporary humor, in a tent with capacity for 400 people, set up on the Monchique heliport, on the next 29th, 30th and 31st December.

This new circus show, which joins the «Peep&Eat» which premiered in Aljezur and was also in Monchique, was the way to open, with a bang, the programming «Farming the Sea, The Arts in Alto da Serra and Costa Vicentina», which, for three years, wants to take in the local culture, mix it with artists from abroad and offer a program that leaves its roots in these two districts of the Barlavento Algarvio.

O Sul Informação he was talking to choreographer Madalena Victorino and director Giacomo Scalisi, who are responsible for the «Lavrar o Mar» project, one of the most interesting to be supported in this first year of the «365 Algarve» program, promoted in the region, between October and May, by the Secretariats of State for Tourism and Culture and paid entirely by funds from Turismo de Portugal.

Giacomo Scalisi has no doubts: «without 365 Algarve, there was no “Lavrar o Mar” project yet. This is one of those miracles that happen».

“We wanted to open the project with two outstanding shows, to make it easier for people to realize that something had started”. After the gastronomic theater «Peep&Eat» was a success in Aljezur and Monchique (600 people, with an extra session to be booked), Madalena and Giacomo hope that the same will happen with the new circus, which could attract 1200 to Monchique people. Tickets, so far, have been selling very well.

Starting at 21 pm, there will be two hours of unforgettable party, with the twelve artists, musicians and acrobats of «Cheptel Aleikoum, Circa Tsuica». “This new circus company that comes from France is a very particular group. Part of a fanfare that mixes music with circus. The instruments themselves are transformed into acrobatic objects and the public is also called to take part in the party», explains Giacomo Scalisi.

On the 31st, because it will be New Year's Eve, the party will be special and lasts beyond midnight. «Taking on the tradition of Death because From Monchiquense, we will have coffee, medronho and children to offer, as well as the fanfare of the French company, which will accompany it with music until midnight», reveals Madalena Victorino.

The “Lavrar o Mar” project, which, in addition to Aljezur and Monchique, should also encompass the neighboring Alentejo municipality of Odemira, is much more than these two initial shows. In 2017, right in January, the artistic residencies begin, which will culminate in May, with a festival on two weekends. And that, in the meantime, they have some surprises prepared, during the Festival do Medronho, at the end of March, in Monchique.

«We want to be close to the local festivities and that started with “Peep&Eat”, which made its debut and ran alongside the Sweet Potato Festival in Aljezur. And it will happen with the Medronho Festival, in Monchique», explained Madalena Victorino.

The schedule of «Lavrar o Mar» between January and May is rich and full of surprises. But this will be discussed in detail in a few days.
