Largo Alves Roçadas, Rua Manuel de Arriaga, Praça da República and Rua Coronel Figueiredo, in the crumb of the old center of Lagoa, will start work within a week, on 3 October, in an intervention that will last for 135 days and cost 420 euros.
These are the works of revitalization, rehabilitation and requalification, which promise an authentic "revolution" in the center of Lagoa, as I told the Sul Informação the president of the Chamber Francisco Martins.
The intervention will take place in an area of 4.820 square meters and envisages the creation of «a new image, restructuring car traffic and creating leisure areas, where people from Lagos and visitors can enjoy the historic-civilizational component, with freedom of movement, accessibility and mobility for all”.
"Right now, that area is known for its disorderly car parking and the difficulty of access even for those on foot, so that there are few attractions for the people of Lagos or for our visitors to go downtown," said Francisco Martins .
It is difficult for cars, parking lots and pedestrians to coexist in the area to intervene, especially because there is the Municipal Market, one of the Pharmacies, the Post Office and the Igreja da Misericórdia, where funerals and funerals take place. It is also an area where some shops, cafes and restaurants resist and where people, mostly elderly, also live.
The works that will now advance were subject to a period of public discussion., in which residents participated, but especially merchants from that area of the city. "We collected your opinions, taken into account in the final version", guaranteed the mayor.
One of the major changes to be implemented will be the possibility for traffic, in the Municipal Market area, to move in one direction only. However, the solution that will be implemented is "versatile and multipurpose", since "it will allow the ascending or descending one-way options, as well as both, in view of the currently verified access and circulation needs", explains the Câmara de Lagoa .
The urban furniture to be placed can be adapted, «taking into account the exclusive pedestrian use, as well as the shared use, considering, however, always better car management», adds the municipality.
The Chamber recalls that, after the municipality of Lagoa was founded on January 16, 1773, the then town was «very badly treated» by the earthquake of November 1, 1755. The structure of the old center of the current city has changed little since reconstruction after this great earthquake.
Bearing in mind that these works will last for about four months and will certainly cause inconvenience, the Lagoa City Council guarantees that «everything will be done in order to minimize the inconveniences produced» and asks for «the better understanding of its residents».
In the end, says the municipality, "the intervention will be a source of pride".
