human cordThey came from all over the Algarve and even from outside the region, to join hands and form a human cordon of protest against the prospecting and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the Algarve. It was this Sunday, in Ilha de Tavira, that the "anti-fossil camp" that took place there during the weekend was the culmination.

In total, about a hundred people participated, mostly linked to the various movements. The protesters demanded the immediate revocation of prospecting contracts that they consider a risk to the environment and to the tourism sector in the south of the country.

The protest event was attended by representatives of the Algarve Free Oil Platform (PALP), the Movement Tavira in Transition, movements from Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, other organizations linked to the environment and also the Association of Fishermen and Shipowners of Ilha de Tavira.

Over the weekend, the fifty participants at the camp distributed information to holidaymakers, held information sessions and also took the opportunity to collect signatures for the public consultation on oil exploration at sea, off the coast of Aljezur.

This public consultation, which runs until 3 August, on the request for oil exploration in the “deep offshore” of the Alentejo Basin, 46,5 kilometers off the coast of Aljezur, carried out by the ENI/Galp Consortium, is, in fact, the priority of movements and associations that fight against oil exploration on land and at sea, in the Algarve.
