head and david careerThe Arte Doce Contest fair opens today, July 29, at 18 pm, in Lagos, and, in addition to a strong musical poster, with David Carreira, Cuca Roseta and André Sardet, it presents many new products.

Every year the ritual is repeated. On the last weekend of July, Lagos becomes the artistic capital of the Algarve's sweets, with the organization of the Arte Doce Contest Fair at the Municipal Sports Complex. Regional sweets, made mainly from almonds and figs, are joined by regional products, handicrafts and musical entertainment.

This year, the theme is «Places of Globalization», the motto of the candidacy led by the Algarve Tourism Region and by the Regional Directorate of Culture presented to the UNESCO National Commission for the classification of several places in the Algarve, with Lagos at the head, as Heritage of Humanity, for its connection to the great maritime adventure of the XNUMXth century Discoveries.

Sara Coelho, Councilor for Culture at the Chamber of Lagos, told the Sul Informação that «this is a theme that will give rise to works of a very varied nature». He explained that from the hands of the confectioners who are going to present their work in the competition, sweets can come out portraying «events, architecture, characters from history, devices and production devices of the time, among many other themes». Basically, even when the raw material is mainly almonds or figs, imagination is the limit!

The councilor added that, this year, the Câmara de Lagos, which organizes this event with a lot of tradition, increased “the value of the prizes, to make the fair more attractive and appeal to more bakers to participate”. And the bet worked.

On the other hand, sweets who participate in the contest and sell at the fair were exempt from paying the registration fee.

Thanks to all these incentives, participation increased. And the desserts present are not only from Lagos but also from the rest of the Algarve (Mexilhoeira Grande, Parchal, etc.), always with the objective of «promoting the arts and traditions».

As for handicrafts, there will be representatives from Lagos, Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão and Odivelas, and it is also possible to taste the liqueurs and honey from Caldas da Rainha. The stands, on the other hand, «have a more professional and more uniform appearance, in order to make the event more appealing».

«This year, we carried out an evaluation of the Arte Doce Contest Fair and we considered that it was worth continuing to invest. Hence the reinforcement of musical animation, calling renowned artists such as David Carreira, Cuca Roseta or André Sardet», explained Sara Coelho.

But the program includes much more animation, with theater groups, showcookings de chefs renowned, a demonstration of cocktails and the awards ceremony for the competition, in its two aspects, for “Arte Doce” and “Quality in Tradition”.

The place itself – with more space and easy parking at the foot – “allows visitors to go there to eat, sweets and more, to be there, to spend a pleasant moment and see the show”.

The Arte Doce Contest Fair opens today and runs until Sunday, 31 July, always open between 18 pm and midnight, in the Municipal Pavilion of the Complexo Desportivo de Lagos, right at the entrance to the city.
