Young Algarve sailors Guilherme Cavaco and Beatriz Gago shone, at individual level, in the Optimist World Championship, which runs until Sunday, in Vilamoura. Guilherme Cavaco won 20th place in the classification and Beatriz Gago was sixth in the women's sector and 59th in the overall classification. The race was won by the Swiss Max Wallenberg and the best girl was the Maltese Victoria Shultheis.

According to the organization, yesterday, which marked the end of the individual competition, was «complicated in Vilamoura, with the wind being very unstable in terms of direction and speed. In the only regatta that was possible – two were planned – it blew from the Southwest with 10 knots of intensity».

Max Wallenberg was second in the single of the journey and benefited from the disqualification by start
Norwegian Mathias Berthet's advance to win the title. The Nordic sailor, who was a leader,
Silver and Muhammad Fauzi Kaman Shah, from Malaysia, won bronze.

In the women's sector, Victoria Schultheis, from Malta, reached the highest place on the podium, ranking 20th overall. The Danish Helena Wolff (22nd in the general) and the Singaporean Jodie Lai (32nd in the
overall) were ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Beatriz Gago, from Porto, reached an "excellent" 6th place and finished the Worlds in 59th place.

Guilherme Cavaco, on the other hand, was 20th in the gold group, a result "remarkable for the young sailor of just 11 years old", according to the organization.

Today, Saturday, the first Team Racing races of the Optimist World Championship are held.
