physiotherapy and hydrotherapyThe Support Center for the Elderly of Portimão is currently designing a Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The equipment, budgeted at hundreds of thousands of euros, will be built on the land of that private social solidarity institution, and the works should start during the next year.

According to Figueiredo Santos, president of the institution's board, "the investment that will be made has a mainly social return, as it aims to create permanent monitoring of users in an area of ​​health that is important for their age, allowing them to have daily monitoring in prevention, maintenance and cure of clinical situations that appear”.

On the other hand, and still according to the director, “the opening of the Center to members and other users, under conditions still to be defined, will bring important benefits that will be reinvested in the institution”.

The future Physiotherapy Centre, whose project is under consideration by the Portimão City Council and the Algarve Regional Health Administration, will have clinical and technical areas, with two consultation offices and a prosthesis testing room with gym, treatment room with equipment in the gym, a respiratory kinesitherapy room with aerosols, a therapeutic gym also in the kinesitherapy area and another hydrotherapy gym with a swimming pool, hydromassage and contrast and whirlpool baths, a novelty in physical medicine and medical centers regional rehabilitation.

For Fernanda Encarnação, technical director of Lar da Raminha, who follows the installation process, “giving the institution equipment and technical-human resources in an area as sensitive as it is important, such as physiotherapy, is an unquestionable asset for our users, who will be provided with better conditions for an already long life”.

However, while that equipment does not start to work, the direction of the Elderly Support Center will adapt three houses in Vila Avó – institutionalization unit with villas with a capacity for 34 people – in order to advance with physiotherapy treatments to its users. Diogo Gonçalves, Raminha, Vila Avó and S. Camilo de Lélis, as well as members of the institution who pay an annual or monthly fee to be defined by the management.

“The treatments at this stage, in the areas of ultrasound, magnetotherapy, passive continuous movement therapy, rotating field technology and electrotherapy, will be guaranteed by physiotherapists and doctors”, reveals the Support Center for the Elderly of Portimão.
