DIM_programCláudio Torres, director of the Mértola Archaeological Field, will speak this Wednesday, May 18, International Museum Day, about “Museums and Development”. His lecture is scheduled for 19 pm, at the Municipal Museum of Archeology of Silves.

An hour before, in the Museum's temporary exhibition room, the exhibition «At the extreme of Al-Andalus: Mértola and the Guadiana» will be inaugurated, followed, at 18 pm, by the lecture entitled “At the extreme of Al-Andalus: Mértola and the Guadiana”, by Susana Gómez-Martinez, researcher and archaeologist at the Mértola Archaeological Field.

The day will end with the launch of the Proceedings of the 19th International Congress «Medieval Ceramics in the Mediterranean», at 30:XNUMX pm, also in the temporary exhibition room of the Silves Archeology Museum, which, throughout the day, will have free admission.

But the celebrations of International Museum Day in that city start much earlier. Between 10:00 and 12:00, the school public (2nd, 3rd and secondary school students) will participate in the activity “Discovering the cultural landscapes of Silves”, which is another proposal of the Municipal Museum of Archeology.

Through research, drawing and photography, the activity will allow participants to discover the types of traditional commerce with historical and heritage interest in the city, relating them to economic activity and to some of the archaeological objects featured in the exhibition.

Likewise, between 10:00 am and 16:30 pm, visitors who book in advance can have a different visit to the Museum, with the activity “Visits accompanied by a character from our history”.

The program will continue on May 19, and an awareness-raising action is planned to be promoted by the Museum of Costume and Traditions, in São Bartolomeu de Messines, for the school public (maximum 30 students from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles, by appointment prior), entitled “On the route of traditional trades – Barbershops”.

Messines Museum of Costume and TraditionsThis action, which will take place between 9:30 am and 12:00 pm, will allow participants to visit and explore the traditional commercial establishments of Messines.

“From the countryside to the village – the route of food” is another initiative that will take place at the Museum of Costume and Traditions, on the 19th, taking children between 5 and 10 years old to identify and relate the exhibited objects with the dynamics of an essentially agricultural economy, through playing a game. The action is scheduled to take place between 14:00 and 15:30 and requires advance booking.

The program for the celebration of the “International Museum Day” will end on May 21, at 21 pm, with a Flute and Piano Recital, by Grace Borgan and Cristiana Silva, which will have a unique environment as stage: next to the well-cistern almoada, national monument, located in the center of the Municipal Museum of Archeology of Silves. Admission is free.
