card game the life of the soilsThe new card game “A Vida Hidden in the Soils” raises young people's awareness of the importance of the soil and its biodiversity.

With rules similar to the "fish game" or "fishing game", the players of "A Vida Hidden in the Soils" are transported to the fantastic secret world under our feet, allowing us to discover the hidden organisms that inhabit the ground, how they live and how they are studied.

Sara Mendes and José Paulo Sousa, researchers at the Functional Ecology Center of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), were responsible for the translation and adaptation into Portuguese of the card game “A Vida Escondida nos Solos”, for the children's audience.

José Paulo Sousa accepted the challenge of adapting this game from its original French version, with the aim of «sensitizing the younger population to the importance of the soil and its biodiversity. Our job was to improve scientific information and adapt the language for this specific audience.”

The soil is one of the themes of the curriculum of the second cycle and, therefore, “A Vida Escondida nos Solos” intends to be a pedagogical tool for teachers of Natural Sciences.

According to Sara Mendes, «it is a way of teaching scientific content in a more playful way, and making it more accessible so that students can learn to play».

The production was carried out in partnership with Porto Editora, which, starting next week, will distribute the game to all EB 2/3 schools in the country and to all teachers of the 2nd cycle of Natural Sciences.
