The texts of the Portuguese Romanceiro and the respective sound recordings, when preserved, will now be available online and freely accessible on the «Romanceiro.pt» platform.
The project, developed by researchers from the Center for Research in Arts and Communication (CIAC) of the University of Algarve, will be presented on February 20, at 16 pm, at the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation, in Querença, in a session, which will feature the presence of the Minister of Culture João Soares.
In recent years, CIAC researchers Pere Ferré, Mirian Tavares and Sandra Boto have worked on the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation's collection, which comprises 660 hours of recording on 609 audio cassettes deposited there, and where 3632 unpublished versions of novels are kept and houses 10096 versions of novels published between 1828 and 2010», according to the Universidade do Algarve.
The preservation of this heritage, through the use of digitization, was urgent, «recognizing that its maintenance in the formats in which they were found (audio cassettes, for the sound archive, and in paper photocopies, for the archive of already published texts) constituted a serious threat to its preservation'.
«The opportunity for the digital conversion of the Archive of the Portuguese Novel of the Modern Oral Tradition came in 2013, through the project “The Archive of the Portuguese Novel of the Modern Oral Tradition (1828-2010): its preservation and dissemination”, which was funded by the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian within the scope of the Recovery, Treatment and Organization of Documentary Collections program (2013), hosted by the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation in partnership with the UAlg Research Center in Arts and Communication, developing the noveliro.pt digital platform». explained to UAlg, in a press release.
According to the university, "the Romanceiro is a traditional poetic genre that has circulated since the end of the Middle Ages in the memory of Portuguese, Galician, Castilian and Catalan speaking peoples, having since then spread orally from generation to generation". “It is, therefore, an intangible heritage of exceptional vitality and unique wealth that must be preserved”, he considered.
«For the specific case of Portugal, the contributions of the collections and publications of versions of novels made by names such as Almeida Garrett, Teófilo Braga, Leite de Vasconcellos, Consiglieri Pedroso, Alves Redol, Michel Giacometti, Maria Aliete Galhoz, Manuel Viegas Guerreiro, among many others. This archive is nourished, precisely, by the work of collecting and publishing the traditional Portuguese romance novel that these and many others interested in oral tradition literature have taken and continue to carry out in the present», added UAlg.
