retro oil Press (2)“RetrÓleo”, an artistic intervention project aimed at raising awareness against oil exploration in the Algarve, will be presented on Saturday, February 13, at 15 pm, at Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes, in Portimão.

The performance and dance piece is a co-production by Maurícia Neves and the association Contramaré and has the participation of 17 students from Escola da Bemposta, in Portimão.

Marta Belo, from Contramaré, speaking to the Sul Informação, said that the piece is «a mixture between body choreography and voice, in a kind of musical mechanics». The piece calls for awareness in the fight against hydrocarbon exploration in the Algarve.

«We are against it! Against greed, the shamelessness of ignoring populations, of ignoring nature and life», says the association. The project, "supportive" of the Algarve Livre de Petróleo Platform, wants to prove that oil, sought after in Portugal since 1938, "represents a setback in society and not progress."

The Algarve Free Oil Platform (PALP) and the Algarve Surfing and Maritime Activities Association (ASMAA) are the partners of the event. «We want the participation of the greatest number of people, because we chose the Praça [Manuel Teixeira Gomes], for this purpose», says Marta Belo.

At a time when the Algarve's municipalities are asking for the suspension and evaluation of contracts for the exploration and exploitation of oil and natural gas, this type of initiative “gives the people a voice”. Therefore, "getting people to reflect is essential", considers the responsible for Contramaré.

In addition to “RetrÓleo”, Contramaré already held a debate at the end of last November, at Sociedade Vencedora Portimonense, the association's headquarters, to raise awareness about the topic. The event was broadcast on streaming, to reach a greater number of people.
