Rent a car fireA fire destroyed 27 cars this morning and caused damage to many others, in the car park of the Algarve rent-a-car company LuzCar, located on the edge of the EN125-10, the so-called airport road, near Montenegro (Faro).

It is not yet known whether the fire started with a short circuit or resulted from an act of vandalism, according to the Sul Informação.

Armando Santana, president of the Algarve Rent-a-Car Companies Association, laments "the incalculable loss" suffered by the company based in Lagos. «For this type of situation, since, when the car is rented, the renter is responsible, some rent-a-car companies do not have insurance to cover, for example, acts of vandalism, when the car is stopped. », he added.

The fire alert was given at 2:51 am this morning, having been fought by nine firefighters from Sapadores de Faro and of the Volunteers of Faro and Loulé, with a total of 26 operational, according to a source from the District Command of Relief Operations (CDOS) to our newspaper.

Armando Santana denounced that driverless car rental companies in car parks near the airport are “frequent victims of numerous thefts. They steal mirrors, gasoline, wheels, tires. In low season, when cars are more parked in car parks, it's the day to day».

The problem is that many of the small rent-a-car companies don't have 24-hour security at these parks. "Security depends on the portfolio of each company" and these "of a regional nature live with many difficulties," added the leader of the sector association.

Armando Santana also regretted the fact that there was "little public lighting" in the area of the airport road. «We have already told the Parish Council of Montenegro, the Chamber of Faro and to GNR that, for them to save half a dozen pennies on public lighting, the most insecure area is left».
