paul saA PCP delegation, including deputy Paulo Sá, elected by the Algarve, met on October 26 with the Union of Unions of the Algarve, the Union of Workers in Public and Social Functions of the South and Autonomous Regions and also with the South Zone Teachers Union.

At the meeting with the Union of Trade Unions, the economic and social situation in the Algarve was analyzed, with particular focus on the “serious problem” of unemployment that plagues the region.

According to the communists, “the high level of unemployment, combined with low wages, job insecurity and wage arrears, clearly reflects the rapid general impoverishment of the population and the destruction of economic activity in the Algarve region, resulting from the measures imposed within the scope of the Troika Program undertaken with the IMF, the European Union and the European Central Bank».

The object of analysis was also the degradation of labor rights and the weakening of labor relations, which translate, in particular, into "the increase in the number of workers moving between unemployment and precarious employment contracts and in the number of employment contracts. work of short or very short duration, the abusive use of trainees in filling permanent jobs, the use of employment and insertion contracts and wage arrears».

Participants at the meeting converged on the opinion that "a policy of valuing work and workers and combating unemployment and job insecurity is necessary, paving the way for economic development, social progress and raising the living conditions of workers ».

At the meeting with the Union of Workers in Public and Social Functions, the PCP delegation learned about the demands of workers in the Public Administration, which the communists say are being "hard hit by the austerity measures imposed by the PSD/CDS Government, namely with regard to wages and pensions, timetables, vacations and holidays and employment'.

Specific problems of Public Administration workers in the Algarve were also reviewed, and the PCP delegation assumed the commitment to question the Government on these matters through its Parliamentary Group.

Finally, at the meeting with the Southern Zone Teachers Union, the PCP delegation learned about the twelve immediate implementation measures to be presented by FENPROF to the parliamentary groups and the government constituted following the October 4 elections, thus as one of the three fundamental axes of action of this union structure representing teachers and educators.

Also here, the PCP delegation undertook to question the Government about the concrete problems of the Education sector.

Next week, the PCP will continue this round of meetings with unions representing workers from different sectors of activity.
