heroes of the fruit_2Students from 28 kindergartens and 1st cycle schools in 10 municipalities in the Algarve are candidates for “Heróis da Fruta”, in this, which is the fifth edition of the country's largest health education program, with 875 schools enrolled throughout the country.

The official start of the 5th edition of the «Fruit Heroes – Healthy School Snack» – was marked in all registered schools with the inauguration of the “Merit Chart – Today I ate fruit”, in which students paint “Merit Stars” next to the its name, as a form of daily reward for eating fruit at snack time.

In the 2015/2016 school year, 52.832 students from 2.607 classes, from 875 kindergartens and elementary schools in all districts in the country, including the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores.

schools of fruit heroes by countyMário Silva, president and founder of APCOI, stated that “these students are joining the 180 people who have already participated in this project in previous academic years. From year to year, we form a veritable battalion of heroes with the super-power to infect Portugal, alerting children and adults to the importance of food for our health. A success that was only possible thanks to the involvement of the various entities that joined this initiative”.

In the coming weeks, teachers and educators will be invited to explore various topics, through worksheets and pedagogical activities to carry out in their classroom, which in addition to encouraging the consumption of fruit in the quantities recommended by the WHO (World Health Organization ), also provide children with important lessons about healthy eating, physical activity, body hygiene, agriculture, saving and saving, respect for the environment and emotional well-being, which help them to grow up healthy, active and happy.

Participating classes will also have to make a music video to teach adults what they have learned throughout the project. The most creative songs will be chosen by a Jury that is composed of leading names in the Portuguese music scene: João Gil, Ana Bacalhau by Deolinda, Amor Electro, Henrique Feist, Maria João, Mário Laginha, Vanessa Silva, Rita Redshoes, OqueStrada, HMB , Frankie Chavez, Filipe Pinto and also the children's singer Avô Cantigas.
