vicente ensembleThe play «Leixai-me Ouvir e Folgar», a show that brings together the performing arts and ancient music, written and composed «in the time of Gil Vicente», is the proposal for this afternoon, at 17 pm, at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, in Vila do Bispo.

The show is presented by Ensemble Vicente, and all the participants in this piece are specialists in ancient arts, both the actor Nuno Meireles, who is also responsible for the dramaturgy, and the musicians Manuela Lopes (soprano) and Hugo Sanches (Vihuela).

The piece has its “absolute debut” in this cycle, but will be presented again tomorrow, Saturday, August 15, at the inauguration of the Lagos Artists Show (MALA), in the patio of the Centro Cultural de Lagos.

This is one event integrated in the IV Cycle of Ancient Music “Sons Antigos a Sul” taking place during the month of August, part of the DiVaM program – Dynamization and Valorization of Monuments, of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

This project for the promotion and dissemination of Ancient Music in the Algarve, conducted by the Academy of Music of Lagos, whose first edition took place in 2012, arose from the need to make this historical vision known to the entire resident local community and its visitors.

"This year, we have the introduction of theatre, after having already introduced dance in 2014," he explained to Sul Informação Daniela Tomaz, the artistic director of «Sons Antigos a Sul».

«This is a project that we have wanted to implement for some time, promoted by specialists in this period of history. We wanted to make the connection to the Discoveries in the different shows of the cycle», bearing in mind that the 600th anniversary of the Taking of Ceuta is commemorated, to which Lagos was closely linked.
This afternoon's concert is preceded by a cocktail party and entry costs 5 euros.

Program Notes:
«Gil Vicente (c.1470 – after 1536) is the synthesis figure of European medieval theater.
A paradoxical author who combines profane theater (momos, farces, soties, rogue sermons, chivalric romances) and religious theater (mysteries, hagiographies, preaching) is a unique case in the Portuguese panorama.
He draws influences from court festivities, from Christian doctrine (especially from Marian worship), from Castilian authors such as Juan del Encina, and we can say that he invented the Portuguese theater, which with him enters directly into his majority.
His work spans almost forty years from which we have the posthumous compilation made by his children: Copilação de Todalas Obras de Gil Vicente (1562).
In this multifaceted work, in this total theater in which medieval theater, dance and music are found, musical examples abound, of which we sometimes have the text and the indication of the music (vilancico, anthem, novel) but most of the time only the text, without even information about the author of the song.
The medieval synthesis of which Gil Vicente was the protagonist serves as the motto for this theatrical concert “Leixai-me listen and play”: baptized with this verse by Inês Pereira, in this concert we make the Vincentian theater dialogue with ancient music, representing both moments. of its religious theater as of the profane theater in which music plays a central role.
We will therefore have Theater and Music with Gil Vicente in dialogue with authors of the Cancioneiros de Elvas, Belém and Paris: Alonso Mudarra, Luys Milan, Luis de Narvaez and Miguel de Fuenllana. Since we know that the Motete da Cananea, of the play Cananea (1534), is Pedro Escobar's authorship, it will be this author to conclude our concert of scenes, villancicos and novels.
Let's read you so listen and play.
