Ambulance Relief. Tavira Municipal FirefightersA girl was born last night in the middle of Via do Infante, next to the node of Faro. The Municipal Fire Department of Tavira received the alert that a woman was in labor at 21:05 pm, they left the barracks a minute later, to be transported to the Hospital in Faro, but the “hurried” baby did not wait until reaching his destination and was born in the ambulance at 21 pm.

The firefighters who followed in the rescue ambulance, José Pereira and Jorge Vital, pulled over the vehicle and helped give birth to the girl, the daughter of Portuguese parents, still on the A22.

Jorge Domingues, 2nd Commander of the Municipal Fire Department of Tavira, told the Sul Informação that “everything went well” and that “this is an unusual situation. It has already happened, but not lately. I cannot say whether or not it was the first time that these firefighters assisted in a delivery, because the last time such a situation happened was some time ago, but they are municipal firefighters with 15 to 20 years of experience».

In an ambulance delivery situation, “the ambulance stops, the CODU is asked for support and a normal delivery is performed. The firefighters help the baby out, cut the umbilical cord, vacuum, if necessary, and then transport it to the hospital», explained Jorge Domingues.

Hospital Source Faro revealed to Sul Informação that both the mother and the girl are in that unit and "are well".
