ecopointThe company ALGAR has launched a campaign especially aimed at bars, cafes and restaurants, to make the collection of glass packaging more efficient.

The «Vidra-te em mim» initiative aims to guarantee the correct routing of the glass packaging produced during the summer period in the Algarve in commercial establishments on the Horeca channel (Hotels, Restaurants and Cafeterias).

To encourage commercial establishments to deliver packaging, "new recycling bins will be made available to the Horeca channel on public roads, with an assisted transfer system, thus providing a greater capacity for deposition". The action will start in the municipalities of Silves and Lagos, «and should later be extended to the entire region», added the company responsible for waste management in the Algarve.

"The project aims to promote the diversion of recyclables from trade and services from eventual landfilling, increase the quantities of recycled packaging collected, improve the quality of this material and eliminate the bad practice (environmental and social) of its disposal around the recycling bins on public roads», explained the company.

«Algar collects around 12 thousand tons of glass every year in recycling bins in the Algarve. But, according to the characterization of solid waste, 16 thousand tons of this packaging waste are incorrectly placed in the undifferentiated waste containers and have the landfill as their final destination, and are therefore not recycled and environmentally valued," he explained.

This campaign intends to divert part of this waste that ends up in the garbage to the appropriate recycling and reuse circuits.
