regatta lagos palosThe 26th edition of the Portos dos Descobrimentos Regatta, between Lagos and Palos de La Frontera (Puerto Deportivo de Mazagón), starts today, July 10, in that Spanish port. Arrival in Lagos is scheduled for Sunday, the 12th, in the afternoon.

A Annual Regatta of the Ports of the Discoveries, organized by the Clube de Vela de Lagos, Escuela de Vela – CEPSA (of Palos de La Frontera), the Municipality of Lagos and the Ayuntamiento de Palos de La Frontera, aims to recall the contribution of the two cities (Lagos and Palos de La Frontera) for the epic of the Portuguese and Spanish Maritime Discoveries.

This initiative, which is the largest national cruise regatta and which alternates the start and finish between Lagos and Palos de La Frontera, will count on the participation of 40 boats and around 250 sailors.

In this edition, the closing ceremony of the event is in Lagos, and translates into a convivial dinner, with awards presentation, in a ceremony that will take place from 20 pm, at the Marina Club restaurant, in Marina de Lagos.

On October 27, 1992, the ceremony of the Twinning Act of Lagos with Palos de La Frontera took place, where the two municipalities sealed the commitment to “maintain permanent ties, to favor and encourage exchanges between its inhabitants in all fields , to develop, through a joint understanding, the feeling of universal brotherhood and solidarity and to join forces to contribute to the success of these tasks of peace and prosperity”. Palos de La Frontera was the first city with which Lagos was associated.

From Palos, in 1492, Christopher Columbus and the Pinzón brothers (businessmen and citizens of Palos de La Frontera) set out on the famous journey that led to the discovery of America.

Lagos, on the other hand, was the place of residence of Infante D. Henrique and the departure port of several Portuguese expeditions, namely the first voyage beyond Bojador, led by the lacobrigense Gil Eanes.
