International Museum Day 2015 v_2The opening of the exhibition “For over 25 years of conservation and restoration”, at 21:00 pm, followed by a recital with Carla Pontes (soprano) and Cristina Silva (piano), at 21:30 pm, is the way in which the Municipal Museum of Archeology of Silves celebrate, on the 16th of May, the Night of the Museums.

On the International Day of Museums, 18th of May, all visitors will have free entry to the Archeology Museum, and can make a visit accompanied by characters from our history, between 10:00 and 20:00.

In this space there will also be a place for the children's activities “How hard was life in prehistory”, at 10:30 am, and “From the puzzle to the object”, at 14:30 pm.

The program will continue throughout the afternoon, with the inclusion of a medieval tomb in the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Archeology, at 16:00 pm, and with the availability of Museum information through the QR Code system, at 17:00 pm. The celebrations end at 18 pm with a lecture on traditional water harvesting techniques, by José Paulo Monteiro, from the University of Algarve.

On the other hand, in São Bartolomeu de Messines, the Museum of Costume and Traditions will also promote on this International Museum Day the children's activities “Discovering the Museum” and “Legends and puppets” which will take place, respectively, at 10:30 am and 14:30 pm.

International Museum Day was created by the ICOM (International Council of Museums) about 38 years ago, with the aim of raising public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. In order to give a universal meaning to the celebrations, every year ICOM adopts a theme common to all countries, this year's theme being “Museums for a Sustainable Society”.

All scheduled activities are free of charge.
