GNR Silves Seizes BeehivesHives, bee nests, 320 kilos of honey, and much other equipment and machinery for beekeeping were seized by the GNR Criminal Investigation Center in Silves, on Friday afternoon, in a house in Fonte Louzeiros, in that municipality.

All this material and equipment had allegedly been stolen by the suspect, a 24-year-old, who, according to the GNR, was already "indicted for criminal offenses, including theft". The authorities even believe that the man's criminal activity "extended to other municipalities in the region, namely Albufeira and Loulé".

The GNR operation, which went through a house search in a farm in Fonte Louzeiros, resulted from a formal complaint on 20 May, by a beekeeper from Silves, who denounced the theft of «a considerable amount of hives installed in the parish of Algoz ».

Thus, in searches of a warehouse adjacent to the residence and another annex on the property in Fonte Louzeiros, 171 half-loops, five boxes, six nests, 10 Lusitanian nests, two cores, a Lusitanian hive, 28 lids, were seized. two dozen clipboards, a hundred paintings, a drum with 320 kilos of honey, an alembic, a centrifuge, a boiler for melting wax and a drum with wax, an electric hammer, two pressure machines, three chainsaws and several parts copper.

The GNR adds that, to date, five victims of hive theft have recognized seized property as their property. The authorities continue their efforts to reach the owners of other stolen objects, namely of the material seized not related to the beekeeping activity.

The Territorial Command of Faro of the GNR stresses that “it has intensified patrolling actions in order to prevent the occurrence of hive theft crimes, which is the most visible result of this implemented effort”.
