Colégio do Rio, in Portimão, will host the awards ceremony for students who won the national competition «Fruit Heroes – Healthy Snacks», on April 13, at 14 pm.
This will be the first of the four schools that won the 4th edition of the competition to receive a visit from APCOI – Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity, which organizes the «Heróis da Fruta», to «celebrate the enormous success achieved by the participation of students in this initiative of national health education”. Among the four winners, there is another school in the Algarve, the Pre-school «O Caracol», from the Estoi Community Centre, in Faro.
One of the highlights of the ceremony will be the presentation of the interactive theater play «Fruit Heroes Super Party», «in which children's animators and mascots remind children of the main commandments of the “Fruit Heroes” through educational games and promotional activities of physical activity'. At the end, students receive a piece of fruit, among other healthy offerings.
The program also includes the presentation of the winning “Fruit Anthem”, a song dedicated to the importance of fruit for healthy eating, whose lyrics were created by the school, and which will be sung by the students themselves.
This will be followed by the official delivery of the participation diplomas to children, which will feature the participation of Mário Silva, president and founder of APCOI, representatives of the municipalities and some ambassadors of the project.
The 4th edition of the “Fruit Heroes – Healthy School Snack” project had more than 47 thousand children enrolled, from schools in all regions of the country.
«This initiative that APCOI – Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity has been carrying out free of charge in schools since 2011 has improved the eating habits of 183.395 children through a pedagogical model of proven success, as shown by the results of the impact of the last edition: 42,6 percent of the children who participated increased their daily consumption of fruit, in just 12 weeks», reveals the association.
In addition to Colégio do Rio, Portimão and Pre-school “O Caracol”, in Estoi, EB1 do Meio de Areosa (Viana do Castelo) and Kindergarten in Santiago (Seia) are also winners of the 4th edition of « Fruit Heroes».
The competition's jury, composed of leading names in the Portuguese music scene (João Gil, Ana Bacalhau by Deolinda, Amor Electro, Henrique Feist, Maria João, Mário Laginha, Vanessa Silva, Rita Redshoes, OqueStrada, HMB, Frankie Chavez, Filipe Pinto and also the children's singer Avô Cantigas) selected three of the winners among the 60 finalists. The fourth winner was chosen through public voting.
Ten honorable mentions were also awarded “which, despite not being winners, distinguished themselves with merit for the quality of their lyrics, their videos or the huge participation of guardians in the public voting of fruit anthems”.
Without any order between them, the honorable mentions of this edition were attributed to: EB1 Ferreira do Alentejo, Confraternity of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, Popular Charity Association of Gouveia, EB1/JI Cardinal Humberto Medeiros, Kindergarten of Largo da Feira, Serpa Kindergarten, O Golfinho I Kindergarten, Portela Basic School, EB Costa Cabral, Nossa Senhora da Bonança do Candal Nursery School in Vila Nova de Gaia and Arcos School Complex.
