Conference migrationsIn her brief speech, and after wishing everyone a welcome to the municipality of Lagos, Maria Joaquina Matos made a point of recalling that “in Portugal, and also here in the Algarve, this is a theme that reality imposes on us, especially emigration , which again felt strongly in recent years, and that with the reduction in immigration and the drop in the number of births, it is today the biggest problem facing the country…”

For the mayor, these are “great problems and challenges for everyone, especially for the rulers, for the politicians elected by the European peoples, who will have to find ways, within the high values of the Europe of Enlightenment, the Europe of Citizens, to continue as a great space for welcoming, for dialogue and meeting peoples, for consensus, in short, for peace, in a world so dangerously unstable in which we are living”.

For two days, themes such as “Migrations and development”, “North-South migrations: what challenges?”, “Integration of migrants in Europe” and “Diaspora: bridge between the North and the South” were discussed during the conference.
